अत्रेय गोत्रः अहं अस्मि।
Rigveda 5.40.6
अत्रिर्देवान् हविषा वर्धयन्न् अग्निमिन्द्रं मित्रावरुणाववोचत्।
Meaning:
“Sage Atri, through sacred offerings, invoked and strengthened Agni, Indra, Mitra, and Varuna.”
Bhagavata Purana 4.1.15
अत्रेः पत्नी अनसूया दत्तात्रेयादयोऽभवन्।
Meaning:
“Anasuya, the wife of Atri, gave birth to Dattatreya and other illustrious sons.”
Sage Atri is one of the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages). His wife was Anasuya, revered for her virtue. Their son is believed to be Dattatreya, a combined incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (in Puranic tradition). The Aatreya lineage is historically associated with scholarship, Ayurveda, and spiritual learning.
“Atreya” also refers to followers of Atri’s philosophical and medical traditions.
